Angelique Kerber and Novak Djokovic have pocketed AUD$3.85 million each for winning the individual titles in the 2016 Australian Open.

The prize money pool of the 2016 Australian Open has seen a 10% increase which then took the entire prize money for the completion to AUD$44 million (USD$31.1 million) when compared to 2014 where it sat at $40 million. Both men and women singles championships took home $3.85 million each. The runner-ups pocketed $1.9 million and semi-finalists event also pocketed $9000, 000.

The new increase formed part of the yearly agreement which saw four grand slams going up in prize money every year. The US Open is the largest paying grand slam with over $42.35 million which was the prize money in the 2015 competition.

The new increase will see players winning singles qualifying round matches taking home double what they were offered in 2015. The Men’s single qualifying round 1 winners took $6000, the second round winners got $12, 000 and third round winners took $20, 000. Both the women and men’s double event increased where winners bagged $650, 000 with runner ups taking $325, 000.
